Chalon Road | Bel-Air

Chalon Road Residence is organized as a sequence of horizontal planes and stone volumes that step down a steep hillside site above the Bel-Air Country Club, turning a significant change in elevation into a continuous progression of terraces, gardens, and outdoor rooms rather than a single large mass.

The site posed a real design problem: maximizing floor area while minimizing grading and soil export, preserving the natural topography, and accommodating substantial parking, all without compromising a clean architectural expression. Resolving this required massing, structure, civil and geotechnical engineering, and landscape to be coordinated as one response to the terrain.

The residence unfolds across three levels. The upper level forms the arrival, where a curved motor court is folded into the architecture itself. The main level opens broadly toward the golf course, its glazing and terraces dissolving the line between inside and outside. Below, a private level meets the landscape directly, connecting to the pool and gardens beyond.

Stone-clad volumes anchor deep roof overhangs to the hillside; expansive dark-framed glazing opens the architecture to the view. As the building descends the site, architecture and landscape become progressively less distinct, culminating in a long horizontal pool and fire-pit terrace.

Below the main living spaces, a wellness level holds a rare feature for a house of this scale: a full indoor lap pool and spa, lit not by windows but by a concealed skylight washing daylight through a slatted wood ceiling. The same device — light filtered through vertical slats — recurs elsewhere in the house, from a screen between bedroom and bath to the walls of the entry sequence.

Chalon Road Residence demonstrates a simple proposition: a house on a difficult hillside site should follow the terrain rather than compete with it.
